Competition. It is really an unavoidable part of life. It begins at a young age, out of all your friends, who could climb a tree the fastest? Who had the prettiest hair, you or your best friend? These now laughable worries felt monumental back in the day. As we get older, competition shifts in content and form, depending on what we choose to do with our lives.

I have chosen yoga as my current life path and love it. My passion for practice and teaching is incomparable to anything else I have experienced thus far. I am constantly amazed at the power of yoga and how it continues to transform students’ bodies, minds and hearts. As a form of personal, individual movement and meditation, yoga is usually not considered a competitive sport. For this reason, the idea of a “Yoga Championship” often brings up controversy and strong reactions: “What?! Yoga and competition together? Isn’t that an oxymoron?” “How can you judge a yoga posture?” I can understand how people would ask these questions and perhaps feel defensive, but it is really in the way you look at it. Like all things, we can take an unfamiliar concept and scrutinize it, or we can listen and gain a new perspective.

The Yoga Championship is a competition, yes, but more than that it is about doing your personal best and sharing the beauty of the practice, similar to the goals of Olympics. In fact, the organization that puts on the Championship, USA Yoga, is working to bring yoga into the Olympics by 2016, a tool to bring yoga to children. Can you imagine what the world would be like if kids grew up doing yoga? I have a hunch over time chronic stress and tension would become things of the past.

Yoga competitions have been happening in India for years and are much more focused on sharing the love and joy of a personal practice with the world than trying to beat out your fellow competitor. This year, I have had the supreme pleasure of coaching a few of my students as they prepare their three minute sets, consisting of 5 compulsory postures and 2 you choose yourself. It has been such a joy to witness the personal growth and confidence these students have created through their hard work and dedication. When they get up onstage for their 3 minutes of glory, the essence of what yoga means to them shines through. To me, witnessing that blossoming is truly winning.

Another rewarding part of the Championship is connecting with so many amazing yogis and learning from each other. When I am in the presence of such inspiration, I discover a new pose I can work on, a different way of relaxing farther into a stretch or building strength. It is this camaraderie and supportive network that keeps me coming back. I feel blessed to be part of a community that is focused on everyone doing their own best and uniting to share a common passion.

I challenge you to this, next time someone brings up a subject that seems like a paradox, listen to the reasoning before jumping to your conclusion. Uncomfortable situations and ideas are the supreme breeding ground for self-discovery and expansion. The more we can be open minded and compassionate, the more ability we have to do good in the world. Let us move forward with a fresh outlook, one of receptivity and commitment to discovering our own enormous capacity.

Many people are beginning to realize that the use of positive thinking can actually have a dramatic effect on their lives. Whether you are seeking to improve your personal or business life or even both, positive thinking can help you to be successful in your endeavors. Positive energy can help to make you happier and more successful throughout your life.

Positive Thinking for Your Personal Life

Improving your personal life isn’t too difficult a thing to do however; you must first dissect your life and find out exactly what you wish to change. Make one list of all of the good things that are going on in your life and that you like about yourself. Then, make a second list with all of the things that you want to change about yourself and your life. Now, use your positive thinking skills to find ways to make those changes.

A lot of people find that writing positive thinking quotes on sticky notes helps remind them of their goals. You can leave the positive thinking quotes around the house or even in your office. Writing down a new positive thinking quote on your calendar every day has helped others remember where they want to be in life. Some helpful positive thinking quotes are:

Positive and negative are directions. Which direction do you choose?

Positive thinking is expecting, talking and visualizing with certainty what you want to achieve, as an accomplished fact.

Riches, mediocrity and poverty begin in the mind.

To think negatively is like taking a weakening drug.

Using these and other positive thinking quotes can help you realize your dreams by consistently using your positive thinking skills.

Positive Thinking for Business Success

In order to be successful, you will need to have a plan for your success. Start by creating your own timeline. Think about what you want to achieve in six months, one year, five years and so on. Write these goals on the timeline.

You will then need to use visualization techniques for positive thinking to see how you can get what you want and be successful. Close your eyes and put yourself into the situation you wish to be in each amount of time. If you can see it, you can make it happen through positive thinking.

People seeking to find success in their business careers often find that positive thinking quotes can enhance their ability to stay on the right path. You can put post it notes around your office, house and even in your car reminding you of such positive thinking quotes. These are some of the best encouraging quotes that may help you follow through with your positive thinking program.

The only thing that stands between a man and what he wants from life is often merely the will to try it and the faith to believe that it is possible.

Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.

The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.

You’ll need to find ways to achieve your goal to be successful. Success will never seek you out. You must make a detailed plan on how you will find success. If your road to success dead ends, simply turn around and get back on the right path.

Always use your positive thinking skills to find the success that you deserve. Eliminate all of the negativity in your life and only leave room for positive energy. Your positive outlook on life will help you to achieve great success.

Moving from an outer life focus to an inner life focus defines a major transition in a persons personal and spiritual development. Living from this key stage you begin to start setting personal and spiritual goals for your life by willingly aligning your life’s energy with the guidance from the wisdom teaching within you. At the lower stages of spiritual and personal development goals are mostly driven by ego wants. I use the word lower here; this isn’t to be regarded as inferior.

Moving through the various stages of personal and spiritual development is a recognised process. You do not skip one stage and then immediately jump into higher levels of personal and spiritual awareness. Each higher phase of personal and spiritual awareness involves control over that stage. It is this mastery that gives the drive and the power to push on through all the resistance to the next stage. During all phases of spiritual and personal development you will experience resistance.

When the personality begins to become more integrated the pursuit of personal and spiritual development goals becomes less driven by the ego and begins to enter a state of flow. There is less requirement to drive the results. The energy that was once moved from the will of the personality begins to become a willingness that then expresses your heart’s desire. This willingness, rather than willfulness, becomes the drive that then manifests your sought after goals.

This higher alignment with your goals is a process of allowing. All wisdom teachings suggest that this way of approaching life is a superior way. When I use the word superior I do not intend this as a judgement but more as a description of a life lived from a sense of ease and balance. This higher process of personal and spiritual development has been given different names. It has been called the Tao. It is the invitation made from the wisdom teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. It is part of one’s true spiritual education and should be part of the education that you receive in centers of higher learning. Unfortunately most centers of higher learning ignore such wisdom teachings.

The person who can gain most benefit from this higher wisdom teaching is the person who can trust their intuition and their inner voice. Such an individual will have developed a level of personal integration whereby they are then able and willing to trust the still small voice within. If one mistrusts their interior knowing or lives a driven life, this power tends not to be made available to them. Such a person will have the tendency to set goals from the directive of the ego self and then use the power of their will to drive forward the never ending demands of the ego. This is the case even though such goals are being driven at high cost to themselves and loved ones.

At the lower levels of personal and spiritual development goal setting can become, as many behavior’s do become, addictive. This type of addiction nonetheless, is socially accepted and is commonly rewarded. When goals are being driven solely from the will this tends to reflect that the practice is being done in a half hearted way. This approach to goal setting result’s in the development of a one-sided personality. Such a person becomes more and more driven. They become more isolated from the potential fullness of a life lived from a more integrated persona.

Goals, lived in alignment with core values, lived in alignment with the will and the willingness to trust the creative process leads to a life of harmony. It is learning how to be in flow. It is allowing the drive of Creation to create forms in this world world through you. This way of setting goals is the way that the wisdom of the I Ching refers to as ‘the way of the superior man ‘ (and indeed this applies just as much to men and women). This way of the superior man or woman tends to be very different from the way that many people engage in the practice of goal setting. The primary focus of setting goals very often tends to be purely self serving with no relation to the higher Self.

Goal setting, like any other aspect of life, is a matter of balance. If the practice of goal setting becomes one-sided as, frequently occurs, then life will create situations that will pull you into balance. Often such a pull is resisted by the ego. This resistance is called suffering. It’s good to have goals. Remember, however, to keep a balance between the drive to do and the willingness to simply accept what Creation is more than willing to give. When you are willing to accept the real power of personal and spiritual development then you tend to be gifted the result you are asking for without a great deal of effort.

Using the power of the mind is a very underrated tool in today’s world of strength athletics. The mind is the most powerful thing you have. However, don’t get it twisted. Simply meditating on a big lift for 24 hours won’t push one to a 100-lb PR. Use the mind frequently throughout the day whether it be in lifting or in life. It’s very simple and you can start applying these principles today.

Setting goals

Crack open just about any book on psychology or any decent self-help book and you will see that humans are goal or task oriented. Making a ‘to do list’ at the start of every day or every week and completing those tasks works well with your psyche because this is how humans operate by nature. This is why having short-term goals (daily, weekly, monthly) and long-term goals (quarterly, bi-annually, annually) are very important to being a personally successful human. It’s progress that can be measured.

Focusing on goals is the single most important thing you can do to stay disciplined with training. If you really, really wanted to reach a 700-pound squat in your next meet and you’re passionate about it and meditate on it all the time, I’d like to see you skip a training session. I’m sure you wouldn’t because you’d keep thinking about it. Don’t be foolish though. Every powerlifter wants to squat a thousand pounds and every Strongman wants to load a 500-pound stone. Know where you are at and avoid stupid mistakes. Your goals should be difficult but realistic. Once a goal is completed, you have overcome adversity. Be sure to take note of your critics as well. Proving someone wrong is the icing on the cake when your goals have been met.

Visualization

Visualizing a big accomplishment is the key to actually making it. For example, let’s take a heavy farmer’s walk for 100 feet. Visualize that walk and keep visualizing it with more detail every time. If you’re intense enough in the imagination of the farmer’s walk, your brain will actually take it as a real experience. This phenomena is called synthetic experience. You’ve received positive feedback from the brain. The cool thing about this is that your brain can’t tell the difference! If you think this is crap, try it yourself. It works for the world’s best athletes, so why won’t it work for you? Apply this practically to your lifts or skills. If you have an important contest coming up, start visualizing weeks beforehand. Have a chip on your shoulder and pursue your goals relentlessly. For practices/sessions, it works well to start the day before. Don’t be overzealous. Visualizing your squat session three months away is just completely idiotic.

Belief in oneself

Everyone has a self-image. A self-image is how you see yourself among others. Having a good self-image allows for a positive attitude. You will also have more happiness, better relationships, and more success. As a lifter, be positive. If you’ve been lifting for a while, you know as well as anyone that you’re going to have ups and downs. If you’re a newbie to training, the take home message is to keep pursuing your goals. On the flip side, if you have a bad attitude, complain a lot, and never take responsibility for yourself, you’re destined to live an unfulfilled, unhappy life with few people to share it with. Be confident, not arrogant! Believe in yourself and believe in your training partners. Having positive, like-minded training partners is the best blessing one will ever have in training. They will hold you accountable and expect you to work hard.

Know what makes you tick

Unfortunately, getting people psyched up isn’t a one-way street. To illustrate, athlete A might go absolutely nuts. He may scream, yell, and slap himself. Then he’s ready to go out and do his thing, but for athlete B, he might need a controlled fire until it’s his time to perform.

Know what works for you. If you tend to do better thinking of negative things that you’ve encountered and slowly letting the anger build until you’re ready to release it on an implement, do that. If you do better staying content until you’re ready, do that. This will take time to figure out for yourself. Experiment and see what works and bag anything that doesn’t.

Have a chamomile goblet in your grasp, play some memorable soft music or listen to a soothing harp, with a touch of lavender or frankincense for an alluring trap, take a deep and sedating breath, relax your shoulders and indulge yourself sifting through wisdom in depth.

As established in previous articles defining spirituality as the balance between mind and body, and the importance of its role in guiding us towards our self awareness and inner peace.

And as concluded that spirituality can indeed alter an ill behavior or a miss conduct, it can also buildup self esteem and self motivation.

The self is the most important factor in forming a personality, and how we nourish it dictates how our personality shapes and settles.

The self by nature is more likely to attend to present issues rather than foresight a future effect of a current cause or regress to avoid a repetition of past mischief or mishap that is why the self falls into so many frequent unforeseen traps.

The self needs to be educated, pampered and catered for, it needs to be motivated and constantly reminded of its priorities since it is seldom aware, as it is driven by desires and temptation with high regards to criteria and spontaneous interests…

Spirituality does exactly that. The whole aim of spirituality is to set the guidelines for self improvement and self progress.

As for depression the mind deformity of this age, I have given an ample of information about it in my previous (related to depression) articles. But I am afraid it’s never enough said about this very traitorous opponent to the self.

Ego tends to mislead us into ignoring the early symptoms of depression, which is anxiety, fatigue, and sleeping disorder in addition to the lack of concentration, social interaction, self esteem and other repercussions falling under endless negativities…

The reason why almost 20% percent of the international populations of our race are falling under depression is that the majority of us totally ignore it, giving it an advantage to sneak and infiltrate our mental health pattern and inhabit our minds while inhibiting our average day performance.

And as I have frequently attempted to focus on a new observation in my articles, I will keep to what I am accustomed to and raise the eyebrows of behavioral science community to this new observation.

A new observation will help categorize depression in the field of behavioral science I hope.

When I started observing depression conditions and cases in its mild or sever forms, I at first thought it befalls the poverty stricken communities of the world at a higher rate in comparison to the socially well off and financially more secure.

Well, in part that maybe true, only and on the other hand, I found it to spread among the well off, good looking, elite and popular individuals just as much, even more.

However, the difference which is truly remarkable in here is the fact that the poor and humble tends to recover from depressions much faster than the well off.

We all run into obstacles deterring us from reaching our set out goals, but the ones who are used to success and easy living finds it much harder to adapt to new situation facing them and easily go into panic mode, while the poor and humble has (due to his experimental immunity in life) simpler way to adapt, what come may, this adaptation is what really concerns me in this article.

I remember a common saying; as high a bird may fly, as would be his fall. To put it in other words, the higher you climb the harder your fall will be…

The poor and humble have it in their culture to surrender and accept what befalls them and maybe that is why their depression is usually less sever and their recovery would be much faster. Could it be that their expectations of materialism is in reality lesser…

The poor and humble falls into trance more often and at a faster pace than the rest, and trance is a great healer to many ailments including depression.

Spirituality is the best tuition available at hand and certainly better than anti depressant drugs and much cheaper for that matter too.

Spirituality promotes inner peace and self assertiveness when it comes to setting out priorities in life, and what makes us more liable to fall victims for depression is at the end our list of priorities and expensive goals. This list of priorities is what dictates the pattern of behavior of the majority.

Spirituality may and can indeed heal depression by converting us into less demanding to material things and less overloaded with superficial visions to achieve through excessive consumption pattern.

It seems that the poor and humble found a more convenient way to tackle depression, and that way can be also found in spirituality and religion which is but a vehicle promoting spirituality to help us sustain our sanity and preserve our inner and overall peace in life.

Look for the simple things in life with a gentle stride may you strive.

As I write my final phrase, and you cease your gaze to depression maze

Finish your chamomile and stare into the void for a while.

Enjoy the rest of your day and let spirituality guide your way.

Hum yourself a lullaby theme and get yourself ready for a twilight dream.

Grief can sometimes have unexpected, valuable outcomes as well; many people who have recently grieved a loss have said that their grief has resulted in significant personal growth. Grief may lead to positive shifts in your perspectives on life, and a greater awareness both of yourself and of what it means to be human. As painful as the grieving process is, people sometimes find that the personal growth they undergo while grieving helps them to live more fulfilling lives.

There are lessons we can learn from the grieving process, and the grieving process can lead to personal growth. These are a few key learnings that helped many people find growth from their grief:

Life is uncertain and uncontrollable

You never know what life will bring. There are many aspects of life that cannot be controlled, and nothing is permanent or fixed, including life itself. Gaining this awareness can help life seem less overwhelming when things don’t go according to plan. Life being uncontrollable also means that no one can ultimately prevent a loved one’s suffering or death. For some people, that awareness can feel like a weight has been lifted from their shoulders.

There is joy in celebrating the connection you shared

The loss of a loved one may create a feeling of having a deep void in your life. However, their death can also bring a recognition of the joy and connection they brought to you while they were alive. Through grief, people can sometimes find away to celebrate the value of the unique and meaningful relationship you had with your loved one. As Alfred Lord Tennyson once said, “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all”.

Relationships are important

Along with celebrating the relationship you had with your loved one, you may find that the other connections in your life feel more important after a loss. Many people who have experienced grief begin to place greater value on relationships and feel driven to be kinder and more accepting of others. That can lead to fulfilling, close connections with others in the future.

Confusion can bring new possibilities

Often when people are grieving, they feel confused and disoriented, losing their sense of security. Feeling like you have no foundation can be frightening and cause a great deal of anxiety. You may be wondering who you are without the loved one you’ve lost. The upside is that needing to find your footing again can open up a world of possibilities. You can choose to experiment with new ways of being in the world, and reconnect with who you are and what’s important to you.

The role of faith and spirituality

People often re-evaluate their spiritual beliefs after a loss, and may come to new understandings about their own belief systems. Some people find that grieving leads them to feel more connected to their faith or spirituality, whether that is the same or very different than the form it took before their grieving process.

You’re stronger than you think

You may discover a number of personal strengths through your grieving process. Many people feel more independent, capable, compassionate and resilient after enduring a loss. Those strengths may not be clear early in the grieving process, but often appear as time goes on.

Live in the present

Grieving the death of a loved one can bring you face-to-face with your own mortality. That often leads people to embrace the time they have by living more fully in the present. Living more mindfully and striving to make the most of your life often brings people a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. Grieving may lead you to live life to the fullest and develop a better understanding of who you are and what you really want.

Grieving is painful, and the personal growth that follows may take some time and take different forms for different people. Grief counselling can help support you through your grieving process and the personal growth you may experience. The team at Paul the Counsellor offers confidential, caring, non-judgemental grief counselling in the Melbourne CBD.

The universe is forced to respect your boundaries. Just as no literal vision of beauty can affect a blind cave fish and no sweetness of perfume entices a snail, any aspect of life that lies outside your boundaries will not hold meaning for you.

A mind closed off to love, for example, will look out on a loveless world and be immune to any evidence of love, while an open mind will look out on that same world and find infinite expressions of love.

If our boundaries told the whole story, evolution could never break through them. This is where quantum leaps come in. Every observer creates a version of reality that is bound up in certain meanings and energies. As long as those meanings seem valid, the energies hold the picture together.

But when the observer wants to see something new, meaning collapses, energies combine in a new way, and the world takes a quantum leap. The leap occurs on the visible plane when the switch is “on,” but it was prepared in the invisible domain when the switch is “off.”

For example, our ability to read came into being when prehistoric man developed a cerebral cortex, yet no one in the prehistoric world needed to read. If evolution is as random as many geneticists argue it is, the ability to read should have disappeared a million years ago, since its usefulness for survival was zero.

But this trait survived for the creature who was emerging. Consciousness knows what is to come, and it builds into every particle of creation the potential not just for one unfolding future but for any future.

Nature doesn’t have to predict what is going to happen on every level. It just opens avenues of growth, and then a given creature – in this case us – makes the leap when the time feels right. As long as potential is alive, the future can evolve by choice.

Many people connect “psychic” with storefront charlatans and stage performers. The Wikipedia page defines a psychic, also called a sensitive, as a person “who professes an ability to perceive information hidden from the normal senses.”

But the page also notes a 1988 report by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences concluded there is “no scientific justification from research conducted over a period of 130 years for the existence of parapsychological phenomena.”

I don’t have any particular psychic ability, but am fascinated by it, and appreciate the more sympathetic depictions in movies such as “Hereafter” directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Cécile De France and Matt Damon as a professional psychic.

In our interview, Judith Orloff, MD noted she had intuitive capacities at an early age, but her family did not encourage her to develop her psychic abilities. She is now integrating these talents with traditional medicine, and is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, and also has a private practice and leads workshops on intuitive ability and healing.

She finds that, in general, within the mental health community, psychic ability is not accepted at all. “In traditional psychiatry, it’s either looked at as a sign of psychosis, or else as sham,” she says. But she works with many clients she considers gifted, teaches people “to develop their own psychic ability, as part of how I do therapy.”

In our interview, Jean Houston recalled that anthropologist Margaret Mead “was certainly what you would call, quote, psychic, but she never called herself that. She said she was a ‘sensitive.’ And that’s what I think a lot of so-called psychics are; they have highly developed sensitivity patterns and perceptual patterns, and they are picking up peripheral things that most people are missing.”

She also thinks “a lot” of giftedness, though by no means all, “has to do with having a broader palette of perceptual capacity, being highly sensitive to all the senses, and also operating on different modes of intelligence…”

Dr. Orloff said she agrees with that quote by Houston, but added, “I think it goes beyond the senses, as we know it. It’s our ability to intuit the mystery. And it’s through our capacity to intuit the mystery that we know cosmic truths about ourselves. And it’s exactly the same thing as creativity.

“The psychic forces or the creative forces come through in exactly the same way, in that you have to be open and receptive to them if they come through, rather than effort or force anything. So it’s a whole different way of perceiving than is simply through the analytic mind.”

But she uses both, and says we “don’t have to split off a part of ourselves at the expense of another; we can be everything. I believe very strongly we don’t have to compartmentalize our gifts.”

“Scientific spirituality” seems like an oxymoron. Generally one doesn’t think that science supports spirituality. What is it? It is using a scientifically proven method to find our true self. The “spiritual” I discuss is not religion. To me “spirit” is our true essence. If a person is in tune with his or her spirit it means that that they can be in tune with the spirit of a co-worker or a loved one. Scientific studies support spiritual assertions of meditation’s benefits.
