We may associate beauty with truth, but beauty is also threatening and sparks our defences.

Beautiful people are all around us: on billboards, on TV and at the movies—some of them even inhabit our everyday lives.

Great beauty in another person inspires all kinds of emotions: admiration, desire, hope, despair and sometimes envy.

So what is the psychological effect of beauty and how do other people react to it? In fact being beautiful isn’t all good, or so the psychological research suggests. Here are both sides of the coin, first five pleasures and then five pains of being beautiful.

Five pleasures of being beautiful

1. What is beautiful is good

In many situations we automatically defer to beauty, assuming that along with beauty come all sorts of other positive characteristics. We have a tendency to think beautiful people are funnier, more friendly, more intelligent, more exciting, in possession of better social skills, are sexually warmer, are more interesting, poised and even more independent.

These sorts of judgements have been tested over-and-over again in the laboratory and elsewhere. This is a great example of the so-called ‘halo effect‘: when global evaluations about a person bleed over into our judgements about their specific traits.

2. More desired

There’s a whole stack of research on mate selection and attractiveness. You won’t find the headline result at all surprising: on pure looks alone we prefer partners who are more beautiful.

Of course that assumes that everything else is equal, which it normally isn’t.

3. Better persuaders

Good-looking people make better persuaders (Chaiken, 1979). This may be because attractive people tend to be better communicators and possess more confidence or just because we believe in beauty. Whatever the reason, beauty can persuade us to change our minds.

4. Get paid more

At work attractive people can receive all kinds of benefits. First of all they may get higher starting salaries, perhaps because their qualifications are perceived as more solid and their potential as greater (this is the halo effect workings its magic). Then, later on, they have an advantage in promotions.

5. Higher self-esteem

Not surprisingly, given all the above advantages, good-looking people also have higher self-esteem. What with all those dates and the extra money, is it any wonder they think better of themselves than their less fortunate peers?

Five pains of being beautiful

Now for the bad news about being beautiful. The beauty bias is probably not as strong as some have suggested and not as powerful as we might imagine (Eagly et al., 1991). For example, when it comes to income, in most lines of work it’s better to be smarter than more attractive (Judge et al., 2009). The same goes for persuasion, self-esteem and even attraction: other personal qualities can easily trump beauty.

Psychologists have also begun to uncover the dark side of being beautiful. Given what we already know about the beautiful it may be difficult to have much sympathy, but here are five pains:

1. Less likely to be hired (sometimes)

Although beauty can help in the search for a job, it’s not always true. When employers are making a decision about someone of the same sex, they can let their jealousy get the better of them.

One recent study has suggested that people who are highly attractive are at a disadvantage in the hiring process when the decision-makers are the same sex (Agthe et al., 2011). It seems we perceive beautiful people who are the same sex as a threat.

2. Beauty is beastly

Similarly there’s evidence that female beauty can be a problem in jobs with strong gender stereotypes. For example a beautiful woman may be at a disadvantage when applying for a job which is associated with masculinity, like a prison guard or a mechanical engineer (Johnson et al, 2010).

The same doesn’t seem to be true for attractive men. They can happily apply for jobs as nurses, lingerie salespersons or HR managers without their beauty counting against them.

3. Perceived to be less talented

The halo effect tells us that when we judge more attractive members of the opposite sex, we generally assume they’re more talented than those who are less attractive. This happens even though what they do or say is no cleverer than less attractive people.

But this changes when it’s members of the same sex. In a study by Anderson and Nida (1978) highly attractive people of the same sex were judged as less talented than average-looking people.

4. Lucky to be pretty

If beautiful people are successful, is it because of their talent, or is it just their looks? After all, people are lucky to be beautiful and we know all the advantages of that.

Research finds that when judging their own sex, people are more likely to think beautiful people’s success is down to their beauty, not their talent (Forsterling et al., 2007). So you’re lucky to be pretty, but probably just rely on that rather than talent.

5. Social rejection

Although attractive people are generally more popular socially, there’s some evidence that very attractive people can experience social rejection from members of their own sex (Krebs and Adinolfi, 1978).

People in relationships also protect themselves from beauty by ignoring it. Research shows that when we’re thinking about love we automatically ignore attractive members of the opposite sex, probably to protect our feelings about our long-term partner (Maner et al., 2008).

Gender and jealousy

Most of the research has been done on heterosexuals but it’s possible similar biases operate for gay people. For both gay and straight, the extent of the biases probably depends on how attractive you are (or at least how attractive you perceive yourself to be). People who are themselves attractive probably don’t feel as defensive around other attractive people, so the biases are likely to be weaker for them.

Although we all know about the benefits of being beautiful, it’s easy to forget the pitfalls. This psychological research is a reminder that beauty can be threatening. It can threaten our relationships, our work and our image of ourselves. We admire it and defer to it, but sometimes we have to defend ourselves against it.

When it comes to one key aspect of our health, we often feel starved, look for support in others, and even sabotage ourselves along the way. But we’re not talking about weight management; we’re talking about self-esteem, a central piece of our emotional health and overall well-being.

Though there are a lot of opinions out there about what constitutes our self-esteem, the psychology community has some guidelines to help define it for us. Writing for PsychCentral, Dr. Stanley Gross puts it simply: “Self-esteem answers the question, ‘How do I feel about who I am?’” He explains that our self-esteem can be experienced at an individual or a group level, and that it can fluctuate easily and considerably. And according to Dr. David Rock of Psychology Today, we all have a deep human drive for feeling self-esteem, and when our self-esteem is threatened, perhaps by an insult or simple criticism, we can even experience a biological threat response.

We can often improve self-esteem without looking outside ourselves, but instead by thinking positively in challenging situations.

However you phrase it, our personal self-esteem is with us always and can be tremendously important to our well-being. As with so many other things, getting the right start with a strong foundation early in life is vital, and young people feel the impact of low self-esteem all the time.Recent research shows that, for example, young people embrace social media as a way to deal with emotional distress and build self-esteem.Another study suggests that teens risk lower self-esteem and even depression when dealing with common afflictions like acne. But it’s not necessary to have a Facebook account or a dermatologist to deal with self-esteem problems; one way for young people to work on self image is to embrace positive thinking and speaking.

Further research on emerging adults backs this up. By the time they reach college, the large majority of young women engage in self-deprecating comments about their bodies, which can have the unintended consequence of taking a swipe at their self image. Instead, it’s better to purposely engage in positive self-talk, focusing on those qualities we like in ourselves. As it turns out, one of the best factors acting on adult self-esteem may simply be time—Science Daily reports that personal self-esteem typically is lowest among young adults, and then increases throughout life, peaking around age 60. This suggests that individuals form a better sense of self over the years as they establish themselves within their careers and families.

Sources like the Mayo Clinic reinforce that self-esteem is probably most affected by our own thoughts and actions, rather than external pressures and comments. With that in mind, here are 5 ideas for small steps individuals can take to work on improving their self image and self-esteem right now—

Think about accomplishments or look in the mirror today and give yourself a compliment as one way to boost self-esteem.

1. Pay yourself 1 compliment today. It can be about your appearance, how proud you are of a recent accomplishment, or maybe how happy one of your personal traits makes you. Too often we are our own worst critic, but by balancing those common negative responses with a compliment once in a while, we increase self-confidence, which can have lasting effects over time.

2. Pledge to not automatically answer “yes” to a request from a friend or family member.Sometimes we say “yes” out of habit. But when pausing to consider a response, it might become clear that we don’t have the time, energy, or resources to support this request. That’s when we need to feel OK about being assertive and saying “no” to a request.

3. Write down 2 assertive statements you can use in a future difficult conversation. Some people believe that when they are assertive, they may be seen as being pushy or selfish. But being assertive simply means asking for what you need or want in a neutral or even friendly way, and people generally have greater respect for others who find a direct way to ask for what they need or want.

4. Recall 1 way you recently helped someone, and how it made you feel. Maybe you stayed late at the office to help your co-worker, or lent a hand to a neighbor. Think about how it made you feel when you agreed to help the person, and how you felt afterwards. Altruistic acts like volunteering, donating, or just pitching in around the house can actually boost happiness levels, and give your self-esteem a nice shot, too.

5. Challenge 1 negative thought today. The next time you have a negative thought about yourself, challenge it! When you challenge a negative or self-defeating thought, you chip away at its power to affect how you feel about yourself. By stepping back and viewing the situation from a different angle, the mistake or problem gets only the small amount of attention it deserves.

How to improve self esteem is paramount to our lives right now, because how we think is one of the chief determinants of how we act. Thinking that we can’t live up to who we are and what we do will make us sulky and unable to view the world realistically. We may think like a victim once we start thinking negatively, and such thinking interferes with finding solutions to immediate and long-term problems. A negative mentality can also pervade the family, community, and workplace, and other people will be affected by the negative thinking. That is why it is important to learn how to improve self esteem; if we want a happier world, we should begin with ourselves; we can’t expect that the world will be happier if we ourselves are sad and we don’t practice what we pontificate.

Ways on how to improve self esteem, however, won’t lend us a clear direction regarding our confidence if we fail to identify what causes us to have low self esteem. So the first step is to inquire on why our self esteem is chronically low, or why our self esteem sometimes plunges. Was it due to the pile of criticisms that we received while growing up and which we can’t get over with? Was it because of upcoming events, like company presentations, which can cause nervousness? Was it because of friction in relationships with family, friends, or colleagues? Was it because of devastating situations, like sickness or termination?

Once all relevant problems are identified, the next logical step on how to improve self esteem is on sorting them out into those which you can solve and those which you can solve. This distinction is important in figuring out how to improve self esteem. Often we have a mix of those problems; it is important to identify where each problem falls – and not to classify incorrectly.

What we can solve, we solve, and how to improve self esteem here is to blot out in our mind self-talk which tells us that we are incapable of succeeding in our endeavors. Negative self-talk of that sort takes the place of thinking how to actually solve our problems. So the time that we spend on self-pity about our problems is better spent on telling ourselves that we can prevail, and on finding out ways to prevail. The solutions need not fall like manna in one go – they may come gradually, and each time a solution comes to us, we will feel that it is indeed possible to conquer problems. Conquering problems is one of the best ways on how to improve self esteem, and that will lead us to conquer more problems, because solutions to past problems, in mathematics as well as in the game of life, can help us look at future problems with more sharpness and alertness, and increased knowledge naturally increases confidence.

Regarding those problems which are insoluble – and aren’t really problems in the formal sense – we should still find out what we can change about them. That brings us to the perennial half-glass situation: is the half-glass half-empty or half-full? How to improve self esteem dictates that the answer should be half-full; if we can’t fill the glass, at least we should fill our head with positive thoughts regarding that glass. Being incapable to get rid of unfavorable situations we can’t avoid doesn’t mean that we are a failure as a person; that only means that the situation is beyond our grasp, and so must live with it. And if our sole choice is to live with it, at least we should live with it smiling and analytical, and we should make the best of it at all times and be grateful for our fortunes.

Sometimes, following them at first can be difficult, because they seem too mechanical and puppetlike, but from them, one can indeed learn how to improve self esteem. Happy people often smile; smiling can be practiced; smiling often can lead you to find situations where you smile often, and thus leads you to more happiness. A high level of self esteem isn’t an exclusive property of those lucky enough to be endowed with it; the different ways on how to improve selfesteem are accessible to us and can be done every day.

Boosting your sense of self can improve your relationships, increase your productivity and open up career opportunities, and make you feel happier about yourself and your life. Not many of us have developed healthy levels of self-esteem. If you are among the many who suffer from lack of self-confidence, there are simple activities by which you can gradually increase your regard for yourself, and these are outlined below. Make sure to try a combination of these self esteem activities every day:

1. Do something that you are good at.

You might not be good at math, at cooking or dancing, but you might be good at sports. Think of something that you have always been particularly good at, and try to do them often. Focus on your work, forget about everything else, and let yourself feel good about what you have achieved.

2. Write down your good qualities.

You might not be doing well at work or in school, but you are compassionate and generous. Find out what you like most about yourself and keep that list somewhere accessible for you. Add to the list each time you realize a positive trait.

3. Recall all the good things you have achieved for yourself.

Remembering achievements may be difficult for some. However, good memories like this can potentially boost your self-esteem knowing that even if a few things might not turn out well, you have actually achieved something worthwhile. It can be as simple as passing exams, hitting a homerun, saving enough money to buy someone a present, helping someone in need, and so on.

4. Don’t let it be always about you.

Low self-esteem oftentimes results because we focus too much on ourselves. Remember that the world does not only revolve for you. Think about others, and know that there are countless others who are in worse conditions than you.

5. Compliment others.

Thinking negatively about ourselves can lead us to think negatively of others as well, and the cycle of negativity will not cease. Break free from all the negativity and add in some positive energy. Resist the negative talk and compliment people around you. This will lead others to like you better, and this will build your self-confidence as well. Who knows? You might get great compliments, which can also be great self-esteem boosters. Start watching out for positive traits of others, and you bring out the best in yourself as well.

By following these simple self esteem activities everyday, you will be well on your way to building a strong foundation of high self esteem.

Just as good character will determine the lasting potential of a person, self-image will determine the personal potential of a person. A person never rises above the image they have of themself – how they really, truly see themselves. Until you are satisfied with who you are, you’ll never be content with where you are. A man can stand a lot as long as he can stand himself.

Psychiatrist Nathanial Brandon and expert on the subject, says, “No factor is more decisive in a person’s psychological and motivational development than the value-judgment they make about themselves. The nature of self-evaluation has a strong effect on a person’s values, thinking processes, feelings, needs and goals. Self-esteem is the single most significant key to a person’s behavior.”

Leaders only succeed to the level of their self-image. You cannot consistently live in a way that is not consistent with the way you perceive yourself. If we do not rise to the level of our potential, it’s not because of other people or competition, it’s because we sabotage ourselves. Why is it that people with so many gifts consistently mess up? One psychologist said it is because we will never rise above the level of our self-image. If you achieve success, it’s only a matter of time before you sabotage yourself and bring your level of success back down to the level at which you consistently see yourself.

Followers are limited to the leader’s self-image. The leader’s lid that he places on himself also limits those working under him. Often, when a leader does not think good about himself, he does not think good about those around him.

Good leadership provides security and self-worth to others. It’s difficult to give security and self-worth to others when you’re still seeking it for yourself.

Says one teacher, “I had a great feeling of relief when I began to understand that a young person needs education in more than just the subject matter. I used to teach Math, but now I teach students. A young boy who was doing poorly did better the following year. When I asked him why, he replied, ‘Because I like myself better now that I’m with you.’”

It’s been my personal experience and my observation in working with people all my adult life, that most people have a sense of worthlessness and/or are not satisfied with themselves. They have a low perspective of themselves and that affects how they do their work and live their life in relationship to others. I believe this is a key reason why leaders fail or do not reach their full potential.

I encourage you to seriously evaluate how you feel about yourself deep in your heart, and begin the journey to change where you need to change, but accept yourself – flaws and all – because God accepts you.

Let us focus on your self awareness, what choices and changes you need to make.

We need self awareness in everything we do. Self awareness is knowing and having a clear perception of who you really are. Your personality, behavior, thoughts, beliefs, emotions, strengths, weaknesses, everything you, yourself is. Since self esteem is a reflection of your self worth, your self image, what you think about yourself and how you see yourself, then self awareness is necessary in building self esteem. Being aware of your thoughts and feelings is an activity. Self awareness then is one of the self esteem activities you need to do when you need it.

Know the choices you need to make and identify the changes you need to do. Basically, it is you who holds your thoughts and it is you who makes choices and decisions for you. Now you know you should be aware of your thoughts and feelings, you can now clearly make choices and do things that will boost your self esteem.

Change. As we stumble on the road of success, we learn from our mistakes. We need to change. Again you need to think again, be aware with your thoughts and feelings, make the right choice, and decide what to change to avoid the first failure you encounter on the same road.

These self esteem activities come in handy wherever you walk through life. You control you. The rest is a guide and you are the one who needs to work on it. Better choices makes a lot difference from making the wrong ones. But always remember we are allowed to make mistakes to learn from it. Do each self esteem activities with a positive mind!

We can develop Self-Esteem whenever you want in life, but also from order to create a superb foundation appear to start with inside the childhood once we are growing and developing.

In psychology scientists and various experts imagine that what amount of Self-Esteem we have varies according to luck itself. Some babies are naturally born many different Self-Esteem among others will need to develop it further. Furthermore they reckon that parents are born which has a high Self-Esteem then these probabilities of producing babies by way of a high Self-Esteem is healthier.

Isn’t a proven fact whether genes or the way we inherit our personality lead to this factor; while others evidence implies that there might be a hereditary link.

What we are born with fails to predict what you will be gonna be like through-out your lifetime, therefore no matter in the event you born with low Self-Esteem. It is normally developed at every age, so starting young will give you a really good foundation of building on. Whatever we go through in their daily course may change the levels of Self-Esteem – in other words it can easily fluctuate.

There are thousands of factors which may get a new approach we take to develop our Self-Esteem, this could ultimately trigger low Self-Esteem. With a child as a kid, that are treated by a parents may have a pertaining to the direction they think utilised together treat themselves, as well as their perception on the way they permit others to manage them.

Group social interaction of our own lives will affect the best way we feel – the difficulties that him and i face can often traumatic, resulting in low Self-Esteem, as well as another end with the scale our happier times can increase these levels.

The way we choose our friends can be quite a ingredient that will determine simply how much Self-Esteem we’ve got. Those that enhance confidence and are influential could do much that can help us develop, whilst people continually undervalue us with put-downs can leave us feeling at the low ebb.

Being adjacent to men and women that continually praise us and point out our abilities as well as other gifts, increase our self-confidence, simply because demonstrate that imagine in us. Placing that trust and planting these thoughts throughout our minds about how precisely precisely good we are now at doing things, allow us to your job better. This cycle of positiveness can give us high degrees of Self-Esteem.

The activities which i choose to do can even be an aspect in the way you build-up our Self-Esteem. Any time you enroll for a course at College therefore you find that you are stuck with something you never enjoy, this may decrease Self-Esteem, whereas a plan that you really enjoy would do the contrary through making you really feel more positive.

Engaging in the things which you prefer and love can build up your Self-Esteem plenty of for which you feel a large amount of enthusiasm and might give your better. For this reason, you can actually flourish in achieving and accomplishing something you will be proud of – boosting your Self-Esteem!

Self-esteem begins with loving one’s self. After self-love, it will be easy for you to love others as well. From this, you will become less judgmental about others. You will then exude positivity which will turn into self-esteem.

The first step to build self-esteem after self-love is to be more accepting and optimistic about things.

You should accept yourself as you are, regardless of your flaws and shortcomings. To do this, you must look at yourself in the mirror and love that person staring back at you. You should also spend some time alone and do things that you enjoy doing by yourself. This will make you feel good which will then lead to developing self-esteem.

Another way to be more confident is to be with people who make you feel good and who are not judgmental of you.

You should be with your family and close friends as they are the ones who accept and love you for who you are. You can also meet new people and befriend those who do not criticize you but who believe in you. Make sure to choose the right people whom you will spend time with. Avoid those who pull you down and who make you feel worthless.
You should also take time to know yourself. Know your dreams, hopes, goals, beliefs, interests and values. When you are more aware of whom you are, you will be able to love yourself a lot more which will make you more confident.
There are people who make the mistake of trying to be perfect, especially in the eyes of other people. If you are one of those, refrain from this behavior and accept the fact that you will never be perfect just like everyone else. You can be a better version of who you are if you try hard but you can never be faultless. If you make mistakes, do not punish or scold yourself for this.

You should also avoid comparing yourself with other people. Just like you, they also have flaws and they commit mistakes. Always remind yourself that you are you and you cannot be anyone else.
To feel good about yourself, you should show kindness to other people, especially to the less fortunate. Do something nice for them as this will bring you inner joy that will turn into self-esteem. Being good to others is a way that will make you truly happy.
You should also bear in mind that you are a valuable person and just like everyone else, you have the right to be loved. If anybody tells you otherwise, do not believe them. God created you for a specific purpose that only you can do, therefore, you have a purpose in this world and your life has meaning. If you feel you are not loved and appreciated by anyone, do not forget that God loves you. In remembering this, you will feel a lot better.
Memorize these tips by heart and think of them when you feel down and lonely. When you remember these tips, you will be able to build self-esteem again.

“Self-confidence gives you the freedom to make mistakes and cope with failure without feeling that your world has come to an end or that you are a worthless person.” – Anonymous

Self-confidence is like food to your soul. Can you do something properly if you are not confident about it? Can you even do a simple task of writing or driving if you are not confident about yourself? The answer is ‘No’. Self-confidence is the first step towards doing something. Building self-confidence is not an easy task. Have a look at the following ways to build your self-confidence.

1. Do what you like

Do not force yourself in doing what you do not like. Never do a thing because your friend or your parents say that it is good for you. You are the best person to judge what you can do. Doing what you do not like can have an adverse effect on your self-confidence. When you do not like what you are doing, then you might not be able to give your best to it. And when you don’t give your best to your undertaking, then you do not achieve the best and this surely affects your self-confidence.

2. Listen to yourself

Listen to your heart. Thinking about what others will say is wrong. It is the worst way to judge yourself. Looking at yourself from another person’s perspective can be fatal to your self-confidence because everyone might not have something good to say about you. Considering someone’s derogatory view about you will surely be dangerous for your confidence level. Be your own judge because only you can truly tell about the pros and cons of what you do.

3. Know your shortcomings

An important step towards building self-confidence is to know about your shortcomings. Talk to yourself and try to figure out your shortcomings. By doing this, you can know on which areas of your personality you need to concentrate and improve.

4. Try to work on them

Putting down your weaknesses is not enough. You should think about ways to work on them and improve them. No difficulty, no weakness can be permanent.

5. Look at the success you have achieved

Look at the successful milestones of your life. Appreciate them and try to figure out the strategies you used and other things that helped you achieve success in that endeavor. Try to use your past experiences appropriately in other projects.

6. Positive thinking

Nothing can be as effective and as magical in improving your self-confidence as positive thinking. Keep a positive view about yourself. What you think has a profound impact on what you achieve. So, ‘think positive and achieve positive’ should be your strategy.

7. Don’t criticize yourself

Unhealthy self-criticism reaps negative views, which are harmful for you. And, negative thoughts reap failures. When you assess yourself and point out your shortcomings, try and improve that part of your personality instead of simply criticizing yourself.

In short, be confident and face everything that comes your way with a positive attitude.
